Higher Consciousness Festival Coming to Ozarks

(EUREKA SPRINGS, AR) –This tiny resort community in the Ozark Mountains originally founded because of its healing springs, returns to its roots this October. The 1,600-acre Lake Leatherwood Park will be the site of the Coalessence Festival, described by its organizers as “uplifting the vibration of the planet with 3 days of music, health and consciousness.”

The event begins at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, and concludes at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct 5. Two stages will give attendees nearly constant access to speakers, music, yogis, writers, dancers and more.

Speakers include the noted philosopher and visionary artist Alex Grey, www.alexgrey.com, who will create one of his unusual paintings as the audience watches. Grey’s paintings, according to the New York Times, with their “tantric symbolism, and medical-illustration finesse, might be described as psychedelic realism, a kind of clinical approach to cosmic consciousness.”

Fred Alan Wolf, famous for the metaphysical movie What The Bleep Do We Know, will discuss quantum physics. Internationally acclaimed herbalist Dennis McKenna will present Herbology & Psychology of Enthogens. Daniel Pinchbeck, www.realitysandwich.com, will speak on Contemporary Shamanism and 2012. Attendees may also see and hear 2012 Cosmology by John Major Jenkins, and presentations by Craig Sommers, Jamie Janover, Uma Rao, Deerwomon, Alice, Lia Danks, Christines Joy and others.

The speakers’ messages will carry over into the music, says event organizer Corey Call. “The message is peace, love, unity and respect.”

The music will be varied, to say the least. Reggae, folk, blues, electronic, trance, tribal psychedelic rock, IDM, psy-jazz, Indian, and experimental jam bands will perform. The acts include offspring of two legendary reggae musicians, Bob Marley’s son, Kymani, and Peter Tosh’s son, Tosh 1. Also playing will be Rabbit in the Moon, BT, Kan’nal, DJ Spooky, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Pnuma Trio, BreakBeatBuddha, Govinda, Alfred Howard & the K23 Orchestra, Jamie Janover, BLVD and MC Souleye, DJ ESP, and Jah Roots. Local favorites Ozakwaba and Opal Fly will also perform as well as Artificial Life Preserver, Damn Bullets, Jah Kings, Grant Hicks, Init String, Gift Culture, Tom Foolery, Free Verse, Seed Love, DJ Spiff, DJ Produce, Doohickey, and Vaxanation.

In a separate “Healing Area,” yoga, meditation & Qigong classes will be offered in the mornings and early afternoons Saturday and Sunday. Reiki, massage, and other healing arts will also be available.

The festival is presented by Actions of Awareness, Bouncingb.com and Skinagain.com. According to Call, “This will be a coming together of great minds. We will be uplifting the vibration of the people through different energy healing.” He continued, “What we’re going for is a life-changing experience! Come hear and see the incredible music and dance, share thoughts with great minds, and eat the fantastic food.”

“It’ll be during harvest season,” Call added, “So we’ll feast on the outrageously healthy food grown by local organic farmers.” The North Star Café, an organic restaurant in Eureka Springs, will create the menu. Vegetarian and vegan food will be emphasized. Vending and concession facilities will also be provided. Recycling will be available and encouraged.

Lake Leatherwood Park is located west of Eureka Springs on U.S. Hwy. 62. The park’s 15 miles of hiking trails as well as its athletic fields, swimming and shower facilities will be open to festival-goers. Camping and cabin rentals will be available but space is limited and must be booked through the Coalessence Festival.

Prices range from $21.44 to $101.66 depending on number of days attended and camping/non-camping selection. Children under 8 will be admitted free; 8-12 year old admission is half-price. Friday Night Dance in the Park After Dark Featuring Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band and Trout Fishing in America.

The evening was kicked off with Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band. Wow! There were more than a few people who were blown away with these guys. Blues? Rock? How about Rocking Blues. The show was amazing! A lot of audience participation really ramped up the dynamic of the show. When it was time for Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band to leave the stage, the audience was still begging for more! We will be having these guys back in the near future!

Around 8:30 Trout Fishing in America took the stage. They have been playing for 36 years and it shows. With the release of their new CD they are back on the map again, not that they ever actually were off the map! Great tunes from years past mixed with many new songs gave us a great show. Fans from all over the Ozarks and surrounding areas were given a wonderful show.

Saturday in Basin Spring Park started out with the old west balladeer Jeff Lee. His original songs sung in the style of old west tunes is always something great! Pope County Bootleggers were next. Amazing energy and great tunes flowed from the stage. Next the Fabulous Hogscalders graced our stage with Steve Jones and Arkansas Red giving us their renditions of some old standards. Awesome Possums played some great tunes for us and the Cajon Sol Finished the day with some traditional New Orleans style music. All in all Saturday was a wonderful day for music in Basin Spring Park.

You could not asked for a more beautiful day in Basin Spring Park on Sunday. Sunny and cool weather set the stage for Brent Pierce with special guest Fred Mayer. Next Susan Shore was up with her beautiful songs and superior guitar playing. Effron White was up next and his bumper stickers sums it all up: Effron White – Effin Right! Then our good friend from Punkin Head, Paul Boatright graced our stage with his keyboard and played us some really great tunes. Finally to close our day, our very own Kosmik Debris played us some Eureka Springs Originals.

It was a beautiful weekend and we had some very nice talent on the stage at Basin Spring Park. If you missed it, well, you REALLY missed out. Be sure to check our calendar for more great music coming up!

Trout Fishing in America. is the long-standing musical partnership of Keith Grimwood and Ezra Idlet. The name, taken from an early Richard Brautigan novel, and seems almost as intriguing as a picture of this musical duo – Ezra on guitar stands six feet nine inches while Keith on bass stands five feet five and one-half inches. With the release of their twelfth CD, Merry Fishes to All, Trout Fishing earned their second Grammy nomination. Rev Peyton’s first introduction to music was via his father’s record collection of blues-oriented rock, including Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young and Bob Dylan. At 12, Rev Peyton’s father gave him a Kay brand guitar. Shortly after, younger brother Jayme Peyton started playing the drums and, with a bass player, formed a band called Drive-Thru and played parties. A friend pointed out the blues sound of Rev Peyton’s guitar playing, sending Peyton off on an exploration of the blues of BB King, Muddy Waters and Muddy Water’s cousin Bukka White. The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band has been featured on Sirius Satellite Radio, has played multiple showcases at the South by Southwest music conference, has been the musical guest on NPR’s Wad’Ya Know?. Their music is featured in the award-winning film Mississippi Cold Case by Canadian documentarian David Ridgen. Last weekend we decided to cancel music in Basin Spring Park due to the inclement weather associated with Hurricane/Tropical Storm Ike. The decision was a good one, as we were pounded with wind and rain and had no power in town on Sunday.

We are back this weekend with plenty of wonderful music. So, come on into town and hear some great music. Tomorrow’s schedule:

I love to watch documentaries. My favorite type of documentaries are ones that deal with the music industry. Last night I finally watched Metallica: Some Kind of Monster. I have always loved Metallica and the insight into the band from this movie made me love them even more.

Knowing the troubles and hardships that the band went through made me realize just how hard it can sometimes be for bands to make it. I do blog about my experience with being on the road with bands. In Eureka Springs we were pretty lucky over the weekend. Though Ike blasted us with intense wind and rain and killed power to most of the town,we did survive it as far as we know. Trees were downed all over the whole area. Power lines were on the ground all around town. Power still has not been restored in many areas. In town, the power company did a fantastic job of getting the lines back up.

It will take several months, if not years, to recover from this storm system. There are many places in Arkansas that have no power. Our thoughts and heart go out to everyone who was affected by Ike.
